This course prepares you to explore these fascinating environments responsibly, using proper techniques for penetration (within light zones), navigation, and hazard awareness.
📖 Course Overview
The SSI Wreck Diving Specialty course is a comprehensive program that opens the door to some of the most fascinating and history-rich dive sites in the world. Over two days, you'll complete three specialized wreck dives under the direct supervision of an experienced SSI Instructor.
The course begins with classroom sessions covering wreck history, legal considerations, environmental impacts, and hazard identification. You'll learn about different types of wrecks (ships, planes, artificial reefs), how they become marine habitats, and the specific risks associated with each. Topics include wreck diving equipment, specialized gear configurations, penetration techniques limited to the light zone, proper use of wreck reels and guidelines, and navigation techniques specific to wreck environments.
During the practical dives, you'll practice swimming around and through wrecks (within light penetration limits), deploying and following guidelines, maintaining buoyancy control in confined spaces, and avoiding disturbing silt. Your instructor will guide you through proper wreck approach techniques, hazard identification, emergency procedures specific to overhead environments, and specialized fin kicks (frog kick, modified flutter, back kick) for confined spaces.
Upon successful completion, you'll earn the SSI Wreck Diving Specialty certification. This certification qualifies you to safely conduct wreck dives (non-penetration or limited light-zone penetration) worldwide and is a prerequisite for more advanced wreck and technical diving programs. It also counts toward the SSI Master Diver rating.
