The Night Diving and Limited Visibility course teaches scuba divers how to safely explore the underwater world in low-light or limited-visibility conditions. This specialty focuses on essential skills like navigation, communication, and the use of dive lights to enhance confidence and safety.
Experience the magic of the ocean after dark! Many marine species that hide during the day become active at night, offering a completely different diving experience. You'll learn how to plan night dives, use specialized equipment, communicate effectively in darkness, and navigate using natural and artificial references.
📖 Course Overview
The SSI Night Diving & Limited Visibility Specialty course is an exciting and unique program that opens up a completely new dimension of underwater exploration. Over two days, you'll complete three open water dives — one night dive and two dives in limited visibility (or additional night dives) — while learning specialized techniques for diving in low-light conditions.
The course begins with classroom sessions covering the unique challenges of night diving, including light management, navigation in darkness, nocturnal marine life behavior, and specialized equipment requirements. You'll learn how to properly use primary and backup dive lights, communicate using light signals, and plan night dives considering factors like dusk entries, current changes, and emergency procedures specific to darkness. The limited visibility module covers techniques for diving in murky water, including silt-out management, touch contact communication, and enhanced situational awareness.
During the practical dives, you'll experience the transformation of familiar dive sites as daytime creatures retreat and nocturnal hunters emerge. You'll practice buoyancy control using only light references, navigation using natural and compass methods in darkness, and techniques for maintaining buddy contact in limited visibility. You'll also learn to identify nocturnal marine life behaviors rarely seen during daylight hours — from hunting reef sharks and octopus to sleeping parrotfish wrapped in mucus cocoons and bioluminescent plankton.
Upon successful completion, you'll earn the SSI Night Diving & Limited Visibility Specialty certification. This certification not only allows you to safely conduct night dives worldwide but also builds valuable skills that improve your overall diving confidence and awareness. Night diving often reveals marine life behaviors rarely seen during daylight hours, making this one of the most rewarding specialty courses for adventurous divers.
